Thailand’s ousted Prime Minister Shretha Thaweesin.
Bangkok: If one wants to see the implementation of court orders in Thailand, there can be no better example than the fact that in one stroke, Prime Minister Shretha Thavisin lost his position. The court today removed Prime Minister Shretha Thavisin from his post on the charge of not following moral values. This created a stir in the whole country. Let us tell you that a week before this, the court had dissolved the main opposition party. These rapid orders of the court have caused an earthquake in Thai politics.
The Constitutional Court convicted Shretha of appointing a cabinet member who had been jailed for bribing a court official. The court ruled against Shretha by a 5:4 majority. The cabinet will continue on a caretaker basis until parliament appoints a new prime minister. Parliament has not been given a timeline for appointing the new prime minister. Shretha appointed Pichit Chuenban as Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office in a cabinet reshuffle in April.
this was the case
Pichit was jailed for six months in 2008 for contempt of court when he allegedly tried to bribe a judge in a case involving former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra with 2 million baht (US$55,000). Pichit resigned a few weeks after his appointment when the incident sparked controversy. The court said that although Pichit had already served his jail term, his conduct was dishonest according to the Supreme Court’s ruling.
It ruled that as prime minister, Shretha had a responsibility to vet the qualifications of his Cabinet colleagues. The court said Shretha knew about Pichit’s past but still appointed him as a Cabinet minister and violated the ethics code. (AP)
