Chennai/Puducherry. The death toll due to consumption of illegal country liquor in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district has risen to 48. State Health Minister M Subramanyam gave this information on Friday. The deceased include 3 women and a ‘transgender’.
Of the deceased, 25 died at Kallakurichi Government Hospital, three at JIPMER in Puducherry, 16 at Salem Government Medical College Hospital and four at Viluppuram Government Medical College and Hospital, Health Minister M Subramanian told reporters after meeting those undergoing treatment at various government hospitals in Puducherry.
Minister Subramanian said 168 people, including nine women and a transgender, have been admitted to various hospitals. The minister told reporters in Puducherry that a medical team led by the Deputy Director of Health has been formed to conduct a door-to-door survey to find out the exact number of people affected due to consumption of illicit liquor.
Meanwhile, reprimanding the Tamil Nadu government over the incidents of people dying due to consumption of illicit country liquor, the Madras High Court directed it to file a detailed report on the steps taken to curb the sale of illicit liquor in the state.
A division bench of Justice D Krishnakumar and Justice K Kumaresh Babu has fixed the next hearing of the case on June 26. The bench orally said that this matter is related to the lives of the people and hence the court wants to know what action the police took to curb the sale of illegal liquor and how many cases were registered in the state in the last one year.
