London: In 1918, a ship sank in the sea while going from London to Mumbai. After the sinking of that ship, two rare Indian notes of 10 rupees were found from its wreck, which will be auctioned next Wednesday. Two banknotes of 10 rupees were recovered from the wreck of the ship named SS Shirala, which was sunk by a German U-boat (submarine) on July 2, 1918. The date of 25 May 1918 is inscribed on these notes. Nunn’s Mayfair auction house in London will offer these notes for bidding under its ‘World Banknote’ sale and it is estimated that their price will be between 2,000 and 2,600 pounds.
“A consignment of these notes, along with items ranging from jam to ammunition, was being transported from London to Bombay when the ship was sunk by a German U-boat,” said Thomasina Smith, global head of numismatics at Nunn’s. “Several notes floated ashore, including unsigned Rs 5 and Rs 10 notes, and a signed Rs 1 note. One of these Rs 1 notes is included in this auction. Most of the notes were recovered and later destroyed by the government and new notes were printed in their place. But some notes remained in the possession of private individuals,” she added.
I have never seen notes like this before
Smith said that he had never seen such notes before and these notes came to light after the Bank of England mentioned the incident of shipwreck in 1918 on social media. He said that these notes are in very good condition and they must have definitely been in the middle of the bundle of notes so that they did not get wet in sea water. What is also surprising is that the numbers printed on the notes are two consecutive numbers. In this auction, a rare note of Rs 100 of the then Government of India during the British colony will also be put up for sale and it is estimated to sell between 4,400 to 5,000 pounds. On the back of this note, Rs 100 is printed in many Indian languages including Bengali and Hindi. (Language)
