There has been a significant improvement in the time taken by passengers to receive their luggage after travel at six major airports of the country including Delhi and Mumbai airports. These changes have been seen in the last four months. The latest change has seen that now more than 90 percent of passengers get their luggage within 30 minutes of landing. According to language news,
Giving this information on Tuesday, the Civil Aviation Ministry has advised all domestic and international airlines operating at other airports to improve the time taken in returning luggage to passengers.
Ministry started this practice
According to the news, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) had started an exercise in January to promote the baggage return system of domestic airlines at six major airports of the country – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru. This practice was started under the aegis of the Civil Aviation Ministry after the problem of delay in arrival of luggage after landing of the aircraft came to the fore.
As per global standards set by IATA (International Air Transport Association) and provision of OMDA (Operation, Management and Development Agreement) with the airport, passengers are required to return the luggage within 30 minutes after landing.
Tremendous improvement in baggage delivery time
The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) said in a statement on Tuesday that when the exercise was launched on January 14, only 62.2 per cent of passengers were receiving their luggage within the IATA-prescribed deadline. After detailed analysis, efforts were made by BCAS and several domestic airlines to upgrade equipment, services and monitoring to expedite baggage returns.
According to the statement, in January, 62.2 percent passengers were receiving their luggage on time. Since March 2024, this number increased to more than 90 percent. The percentage of items arriving within 30 minutes reached an all-time high of 92.5 percent in May, 2024.
