Patongtarn Shinawatra, Thailand’s new prime minister.
Bangkok: Amid huge political upheaval in Thailand, Patongtarn Shinawatra has been elected as the country’s youngest female prime minister. Thailand’s parliament on Friday elected Patongtarn Shinawatra as the youngest prime minister. She is the daughter of Thailand’s Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was removed on court orders. Patongtarn is just 37 years old. She is not only young but also very beautiful. Patongtarn is the country’s second female prime minister.
The 37-year-old daughter of Thailand’s political giant Thaksin Shinawatra won through the house vote. Now she is facing nepotism. The Thaksin family has again come to power amidst the intermittent turmoil in Thailand’s politics for nearly two decades. Patongtarn has got the opportunity to be appointed to this post after Thailand’s Prime Minister Shretha Thaksin was removed on the court order just two days ago on the charge of not discharging his duties.
The journey to Patongtarn may be difficult
Patongtarn may have become Thailand’s prime minister now, but at stake may be the legacy and political future of the billionaire Shinawatra family, whose unstoppable populist juggernaut suffered its first electoral defeat in two decades last year and had to strike a deal with its arch-enemies in the military. Patongtarn is currently Thailand’s second female prime minister and the third Shinawatra. Her aunt Yingluck Shinawatra has also been the PM before her.
Patongtarn gave the first statement
In her first media comments as prime minister-elect, Patongtarn said she was saddened and confused by Shretha’s sacking and had decided it was time to step down. “I spoke to Shretha, my family and my party people then decided it was time to do something for the country and the party,” she told reporters. “I hope I can do my best to move the country forward. That’s what I’m trying to do. Today I feel honoured and I feel very happy.” (Reuters)
