There is a possibility of rain in the northern districts of Odisha due to the formation of a low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. India Meteorological Department (IMD) gave this information on Wednesday. Meteorologists have issued a warning to fishermen and people living in coastal areas amid the possibility of heavy rain in coastal areas.
The IMD said that the low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal off the coast of North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh is likely to move northeastwards and turn into a depression by the morning of 24 May. The IMD said, ‘A low pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal off the coasts of North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh under the influence of cyclonic circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal.’ The IMD has forecast heavy rains (seven cm to 11 cm) at isolated places over Balasore district and moderate rainfall over other North Odisha districts from May 24.

IMD has warned fishermen not to go into the sea on May 23 and 24, as the sea condition is expected to be from bad to very bad. Fishermen have been advised to return to the coast by May 23. The Meteorological Department said that on May 22, there is a possibility of wind speed ranging from 35-45 km per hour to 55 km per hour over South Bay of Bengal. From the morning of 23rd May, it will gradually increase to 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph over central and adjoining South Bay of Bengal.
Wind will blow at a speed of 70 kilometers
The IMD said it would be very likely to occur with wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over adjoining areas of North Bay of Bengal from the morning of May 24 and over northeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas from the morning of May 25. It will last for 24 hours in North-West and East Central Bay of Bengal. Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) of Odisha requested the District Magistrates to remain alert and prepared to deal with any situation.
