The government says that there is enough wheat in the country. There is no shortage of it. The Food and Public Distribution Department of the Central Government is keeping a close watch on the prices of wheat. The department has said that it has sufficient stock of wheat, which can be released to cool down the prices in case of a rise in the market. This information was given in a statement issued last Thursday. According to IANS news, apart from this, the government is ready with an action plan to ensure that hoarding is not done by unscrupulous elements to increase prices. This year 112 million tonnes of wheat was produced during the current Rabi marketing season.
How much wheat was purchased till June 11
According to reports, Food Corporation of India (FCI) has procured about 266 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat during the current marketing season till June 11. The food department said that after meeting the requirement of the Public Distribution System (PDS) and other welfare schemes, which is about 184 lakh metric tonnes, there will be sufficient stock of wheat available to intervene in the market if needed. Buffer stocking norms are different for every quarter of the year.
As on January 1, 2024, the wheat stock was 163.53 LMT against the prescribed buffer norm of 138 LMT. Wheat stock has never fallen below the quarterly buffer stock norms. The government has also said that at present there is no proposal to change the duty structure on wheat imports. In recent times, wheat prices have seen an upward trend. Due to the rising prices, common people have to buy flour at a higher price, despite this, today the government is distributing food grains for free to about 80 crore people in the country.
