The local people have started a massive protest against the proposed nuclear power plant in Banswara. There has been a clash between the police and the people who went to clear the land for the plant. The protesting local people pelted stones at the police, then the police also lathicharged the people and fired tear gas shells. Actually, a 2800 MW nuclear power plant is to be set up in Chhoti Sarwan in Banswara. People were being shifted from here to another place.
Dispute over higher compensation?
It is being told that even after giving compensation, the land was not being vacated. Regarding this matter, police from three districts were deployed on the spot and people were to be removed from here. The foundation stone of this plant was to be laid in August. This is why these families were being shifted to another place. While the local people were constantly demanding more compensation and refused to shift to another place. In such a situation, the administration was trying to shift these people with the help of police today, but the villagers came out in protest and blocked the highway.
People also pelted stones
Crowds of people started gathering since morning. Around 10:30 am, a large number of people reached here and started raising slogans. Seeing the protest increasing, when the police started removing them, they started pelting stones. In this stone pelting, QRT jawan Kalpesh Garasiya got injured, a stone hit his head. He has been admitted to MG Hospital in Banswara. An SHO and a constable also got injured.
Women blocked the highway
Many people including the BAP leader have been taken into custody. In this protest, local women blocked the National Highway 927-A (Banswara-Dungarpur-Ratlam). The police tried to remove the women and people. This led to a stampede and some people went to the hill and started pelting stones from there. In this case, the Kotwali police has also taken some people including BAP leader Hemant Rana into custody.
Why did the villagers get angry?
According to the information, the displacement started before the demands were met, that is why the villagers are angry. They say that they will not be displaced until the demands are met. Area SP Harshvardhan Agrawala said that there is peace at the spot right now and the police and administration are doing their work.
Government claims- compensation of Rs 415 crore given
Before the construction of the nuclear power plant begins, about 3 thousand people living in 6 villages Bari, Sajwania, Rail, Kharia Dev, Aadibhit and Katumbi in this area have to be displaced. These families have been given compensation of Rs 415 crore by the government. In return, 553 hectares of land has been acquired. For the people displaced from these villages, 60 hectares of land has been found in the nearby Kharia Dev to build houses.
