Every person wants to live in the big cities of the country to live a comfortable life, but these big cities are now becoming fatal for the people. Many big cities of India are the target of heat and this is the reason that in the last 12 years thousands of people have lost their lives in these cities due to heat wave. This multi-center study published recently in Environmental International Journal 2024 is enough to open your eyes.
A study done by collecting data from 10 big or metro cities of the country, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune, Shimla, Varanasi, shows that from the year 2008 to 2019, about 1116 people died every year in these cities due to severe heat wave.

Why is there a sticker on the apple? 99% people do not know the truth, there is a deep matter hidden, if you know it, you will be benefited
The study shows that due to very high temperature in one day, the daily mortality rate has increased by 12.2%. Whereas if the heat wave continues for two days continuously, then this percentage increases by 14.7%, if there is high temperature for three days continuously, the mortality rate increases by 17.8% and if the weather remains as hot for 5 days continuously, then the mortality rate increases by 19.4%.
These cities are the target of heat…
According to the study, out of 10 cities, six cities have had a high percentage of deaths due to scorching heat. These include Delhi, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai and Varanasi. While the top three cities are Delhi, Ahmedabad and Chennai, where the fire raining from the sky took thousands of lives.
This is the effect of extreme heat wave..
Dr Pankaj Kumar, Senior Director, Critical Care, Fortis Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, says that cardiovascular diseases have been the main cause of deaths in heat waves. People above 65 years of age and children have been the easy victims of heat waves. Dehydration caused by heat waves has led to cardio problems and kidney failure, or respiratory disorders, which have caused people’s deaths. Many people who are comorbid or are suffering from neurological problems are unable to control their body temperature and have fallen victim to heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
On the other hand, Dr. M. Wali, Senior Consultant in the Department of Internal Medicine at Sir Gangaram Hospital, Delhi, says that a body temperature above 39 degrees Celsius has a bad effect on the body, while if it reaches above 40 degrees Celsius or 104 degrees Fahrenheit, it can paralyze the neuronal function of the body. If the mechanism of sweating does not work in the body, it can even lead to coma due to heat stroke. This year too, 5 to 10 deaths are being seen in the hospitals of North India due to heat wave.
What is the reason for deaths in these cities..
Former DGM of the Indian Meteorological Department, Dr. KJ Ramesh says that the continuous increase in heat waves every year is due to climate change and global warming. Not only this, the construction work going on on a large scale in the cities and pollution also help in increasing the heat. In all the big cities where the dangerous outbreak of heat wave is being seen, concrete jungles are spreading, while the number of trees and plants is decreasing. Therefore, it is important that along with planting trees and plants to protect from extreme heat, there is a need to create environmental balance.
