New Delhi. The Delhi High Court has asked special courts hearing cases related to MPs and MLAs to give ‘first priority’ to criminal cases against them which can lead to death or life imprisonment. The Delhi High Court was hearing a suo motu petition initiated in 2020 on the directions of the Supreme Court to monitor criminal cases pending against MPs and MLAs. Which had asked the Centre, Delhi Government and the Registry of Delhi High Court to inform about the steps taken by them in this regard.
According to a report in ‘Indian Express’, the division bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan Singh and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora said in its order that ‘as far as the cases pending before the District Court are concerned, in continuation of the earlier instructions issued by us. We also direct the courts concerned to first give priority to criminal cases against MPs and MLAs punishable with death or life imprisonment. Then give priority to cases involving punishment of five years or more and then hear other cases. We also request all judges to avoid adjourning these cases except for rare and compelling reasons.
‘The sky will not fall if you stay with your son for 1 month…’ Who filed this petition in the court in the liquor scam?
The High Court registry told the bench that currently 34 cases or appeals or amendments related to MPs and MLAs are pending before the single bench of the High Court. In which orders to stay the trial for more than six months have been passed. The High Court bench directed the Registry to remand these cases to such courts/benches as may be considered appropriate and effective for their speedy disposal. So that the adjournment applications in these cases can be disposed of quickly and the hearing can end earlier. The next hearing of this case is fixed on May 20.
