Bogota: The government of the South American country Colombia has taken a big decision. Colombian President Gustavo Petro has signed a bill banning bullfighting. With this, the number of countries around the world where this centuries-old tradition is still valid has decreased further. During a ceremony held at the bull arena in Bogota, a supporter dressed as a bull handed over a copy of the bill to Petro, which he signed in front of hundreds of animal rights activists.

What did President Petro say?

Petro said in his speech after signing the bill, “We cannot tell the world that killing living and conscious beings for entertainment is a culture. This kind of culture of killing an animal for entertainment will lead us to killing humans for entertainment as well.”

Bull arenas will be converted into sports venues

In May, Colombia’s parliament approved a ban on bullfighting after months of fierce debate. The bill would require the government to impose a blanket ban on bullfighting across the country by 2027 and convert more than a dozen bullrings into cultural and sporting venues.
