United Nations: The US has urged all countries supplying weapons to Sudan’s conflict groups to stop doing so. The US warned that history was repeating itself in the western Darfur region, where genocide occurred 20 years ago. US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield told reporters after an emergency UN Security Council meeting that Darfur’s capital, El Fasher, was the only place not held by conflicting forces. He said that Darfur is on the verge of mass genocide.
Many villages were destroyed
The US Ambassador urged all countries to understand this threat. He said that a huge crisis is arising. Thomas Greenfield said that there are strong reports that the ‘paramilitary Rapid Support Force’ and their allied fighters have destroyed several villages west of El Fashar and are planning a major attack on El Fashar.
‘The attack would be a serious disaster’
“An attack on El Fasher would be a serious disaster,” Greenfield warned, adding that the attack would endanger the two million people living in El Fasher and the half a million Sudanese living there as refugees. Greenfield has urged the conflicting forces to end plans to capture El Fashar and not to launch any attack on the city.
violence must stop
Greenfield urged the conflicting forces and rival government forces to immediately end violence and take steps to open direct dialogue, protection of civilians, and access to humanitarian aid. He said that through dialogue, the needs of 5 million Sudanese people and another 10 million people who are on the brink of famine can be met. (Language)
