Former Indian hockey team goalkeeper PR Sreejesh
The Indian hockey team performed brilliantly in the Olympics this time and won the bronze medal title for the second consecutive time. This was the 13th medal for India in hockey. India had also won the bronze medal in the last Olympics i.e. Tokyo. This time the fans were hoping that the hockey team would change the color of the medal. The team was expected to win gold this time, but once again they had to be content with the bronze medal. Team India could have won the gold medal in the Olympics this time, but they could not do so. PR Sreejesh has made a big revelation about the secret behind this and told how the team could have won the gold medal.
Sreejesh gave a big statement
If there is one change that P R Sreejesh would like to see in the Indian hockey team, it would be to reduce the dependence on penalty corners for goals and he believes that to win an Olympic medal every time, the team will have to score more field goals. India scored 15 goals and lost 12 in the Paris Olympics. Of these 15 goals, nine were on penalty corners, three on penalty strokes and only three were field goals. The great goalkeeper, who retired from hockey after the Paris Olympics, told PTI that most of the time when forwards go into the circle, their aim is to create penalty corners because our penalty corners are good. I am not saying that forwards do not try to score goals.
India’s strategy is quite different
Olympic gold medallist Netherlands scored 14 and silver medallist Germany scored 15 field goals while fourth-placed Spain scored 10 field goals. In comparison, India relied more on penalty corners. Sreejesh further said that if they have a golden opportunity to score a goal on a penalty corner, they should not miss it, but if the Indian hockey team has to be taken to the next level and win Olympic medals continuously, then more field goals will have to be scored because defense also has its limitations. He further said that he should not say this but we are not Germany that we can save a goal for 60 minutes. Their strategy and style are different from ours. We made mistakes and conceded some goals but our forwards will have to score more goals so that the burden on the defense is reduced.
