The Election Commission has instructed the election officials of the states that if the identity of a voter is established through the identity card (ID card), then the linguistic or spelling errors in the voter ID card of that voter can be ignored. The Election Commission clearly told the officials that no genuine voter should be deprived of his right to vote. The Election Commission has also said that the Voter ID card issued by the Electoral Registration Officer of any other assembly constituency will also be accepted for identification, if the name of the voter is in the voter list of the polling station where he has come to cast his vote.
How to vote without voter card?
Not only this, if the photograph in the voter card is mismatched, then in this case the voter will have to present some other government photo document. In an order issued last month, the Election Commission had said that voters who cannot show Voter ID will have to produce one of the photo identity cards to establish their identity. If you are not able to show the Voter ID card during voting, then you can show one of these documents specified by the Election Commission-
- Aadhar card
- PAN card
- Indian passport
- driving license
- MNREGA job card
- pension document with photo
- Passbook with photo issued by bank or post office
- Health Insurance Smart Card issued by Ministry of Labor
- Specific Disability I-Card issued by Ministry of Social Justice
- Smart issued by Registrar General of India under National Population Register (NPR)
- Service I-Card with photograph issued to employees by Central/State Governments or PSUs
- Official identity cards issued to MPs, MLAs and MLCs
This is the guideline for NRIs
Whereas NRIs, who are registered in the voter list on the basis of details in their Indian passport, will be identified at the polling station only on the basis of their original passport and no other identity document. It is noteworthy that Lok Sabha elections will be held in 7 phases and voting for the first phase will be held on April 19. Along with this, assembly elections are also being held in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
