The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday announced that all shops and establishments failing to display signboards written in Marathi or Devanagari script will have to pay double property tax. BMC said that the new tax system will be implemented from May 1 this year. In a release, the BMC also said it would cancel the license of all boards that do not display letters in the Marathi language or Devanagari script. BMC said, “The Supreme Court had given two months time to display Marathi language or Devanagari script on signboards in shops and establishments before the deadline of November 23, 2023. “After this, the civic agency started a campaign to check compliance from November 28, 2023.”
It was said that a total of 87,047 shops and establishments were inspected between November 28, 2023 and March 31 this year, out of which 84,007 i.e. 96.50 percent were found to have Marathi signboards. BMC has said that the action is being taken because the shop owners failed to follow the rules despite repeated concessions.
