New Delhi. Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud bid farewell to his colleague, calling Justice Aniruddha Bose an excellent judge and a Bengali bhadralok. Justice Bose was elevated as a judge in the apex court on 24 May 2019. After retirement, he is now going to serve as Director in the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal. CJI Chandrachud spoke from his heart during the farewell ceremony of Justice Anirudh. The Supreme Court Bar Association had organized a farewell ceremony in the honor of Justice Bose.
Congratulating Justice Bose, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said, ‘…there is always an emotional atmosphere while bidding farewell to one’s colleagues. This moment is also an opportunity to look back at his historical tenure and to feel the void created by his departure. Speaking at the farewell ceremony organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), the Chief Justice said that Justice Bose’s contribution to the apex court, Calcutta High Court and Jharkhand High Court has left an indelible mark on the legal landscape.

‘Justice Bose is a true intellectual’
CJI Chandrachud said that Justice Bose is a Bengali Bhadralok and his nature is that of a good listener and a true intellectual. The CJI further said, ‘Justice Bose has not only been an excellent judge but was also an excellent lawyer before being elevated to the Calcutta High Court in 2004.’ He described Bose as a judge who played a leading role in the modernization of the judiciary and said that throughout his career he advocated a technology-friendly judiciary.

In his farewell address, Justice Bose said that the Supreme Court is a miniature version of modern India, as reflected in the similarity of thinking among the judges in arriving at a decision. Chief Justice Chandrachud recalled how in 2012, Bose, serving as a single judge of the Calcutta High Court, had allowed a US-based plaintiff to appear through video conference in a case related to medical negligence. Justice Bose said, ‘Significant changes are taking place in the legal profession in India and these changes are for the better, because now a large number of women are in this profession. Probably our jurisprudence is now the most advanced in the world.
Justice Bose’s career
Justice Bose was born on April 11, 1959. His schooling was completed from St. Lawrence High School, Kolkata and he obtained LLB degree from Surendranath Law College. After registering as an advocate, Bose started practicing constitutional, civil and intellectual property matters in the Calcutta High Court in 1985. In January 2004, he was made a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court and on August 11, 2018, he was elevated to the post of Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
