Rohit Bhatt/Almora:- These days, paddy plantation starts in the plains as well as hilly areas and two varieties of paddy are grown the most in the mountains. The first is Uprau and the second is Talau paddy, but there is also a paddy which is now grown in less space in the mountains. Its name is Red Paddy. Although everyone must have seen white paddy, but very few people would have seen and heard about red paddy. Everyone is also attracted by seeing red paddy. Red paddy also has many nutritional properties. Not only this, this red paddy is sold from Rs 50 per kg to Rs 500 per kg. Along with the local people, tourists coming from outside also taste this paddy. Currently, this red paddy is found in Pithoragarh and Uttarkashi.
Red rice is grown in the mountainous region
Regarding red rice, the team of Local 18 had a special conversation with Jai Prakash Aditya, scientist of Vivekanand Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Kendra, Almora. He told that earlier, red rice was grown in large quantities in the mountainous region. But due to some schemes, the high-yielding varieties were expanded and farmers took the high-yielding varieties of rice. Gradually, people adopted the white variety i.e. white rice. Due to this, gradually, red rice started being grown less due to the reduction in the production of red rice as well as its area.
The institute is working to promote red rice
Scientist Jai Prakash Aditya said that Vivekanand Parvatiya Krishi Anusandhan Sansthan is working to promote red rice. For this, the institute has developed two different types of rice species, in which farmers are encouraged by developing VL-69 and VL-159 rice. The yield capacity of VL-69 rice in Sanchit is 40 quintals per hectare. Apart from this, VL-159 has been developed in Uprav rice, which will benefit the farmers a lot.

Red rice is rich in many nutritional properties
Scientist Jai Prakash Aditya told Local18 that red rice is rich in many nutritious elements. This red rice has properties of fiber, minerals, protein, vitamins. You do not get so many nutritious elements in white rice, but red rice gives you many nutritious benefits.
