Washington: The US has given a big blow to Russia by imposing new sanctions on it. This can weaken the position of Russia which has been fighting a war against Ukraine for more than 2 years. The US has now imposed more than 300 new sanctions on Russia, which largely aim to prevent individuals and companies from various countries including China, United Arab Emirates and Turkey from helping Russia. The US has taken this step before the G7 summit to be held in Italy.
This move by the US is to increase support for Ukraine and destroy Russia’s war machinery among its top priorities. The sanctions imposed on Wednesday target those Chinese companies which are helping Russia in the war. The US has imposed sanctions on four thousand Russian companies and individuals since the war began, with the aim of stopping the money and weapons coming to Russia.
Told Russia a big rival
Aron Forsberg, director of economic sanctions policy and implementation at the US State Department, told the Associated Press, “Putin is a very capable opponent who is willing to find allies.” He said sanctions against Russia are an ongoing process. The sanctions imposed on Wednesday target trade worth more than US$100 million between Russia and its war suppliers. The main objective of these more than 300 new sanctions is to prevent individuals and companies from various countries, including China, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey, from helping Russia. (AP)
