New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting to review preparedness for the upcoming heatwave season, days after India’s weather department warned of more than double the normal heatwave days between April and June. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, during the meeting, Prime Minister Modi was given information about the temperature forecasts from April to June. Especially in central and western peninsular India, maximum temperatures are likely to be above normal. Preparedness within the health sector was also included in this discussion. Which includes adequate supply of medicines, drips and drinking water necessary to reduce the possible impact of heat wave.
A statement from the PMO said that Prime Minister Modi stressed the need for a united, holistic government approach. In which coordination was urged between the central, state and district level administration as well as various ministries. He also stressed the need for early detection and extinguishing of forest fires along with creating awareness and adequate preparedness in hospitals. Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Home Secretary, India Meteorological Department (IMD) and officials of the National Disaster Management Authority attended the meeting.

Heat wave forecast
This review meeting is taking place at a time when India is preparing to conduct the Lok Sabha elections, which are considered to be the biggest democratic elections in the world. In which thousands of people are expected to queue up at political rallies and polling stations. The seven-phase elections will start from April 19 and end on June 1. It is noteworthy that Union Earth Sciences Minister Kiren Rijiju said during the IMD’s seasonal temperature outlook briefing earlier this month that extreme heat waves are expected in the next three months. Everyone including the state governments has made preparations to deal with it. It is noteworthy that in the past also a large number of people have lost their lives due to heat wave. Whereas IMD said in its estimate that Gujarat, Central Maharashtra, North Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, North Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh are the areas most affected by the heat wave.
