Many people take painkillers daily due to knee pain and have a lot of difficulty in walking, such patients are advised to get knee replacement. If someone has a lot of knee problems at a young age, then treatment is done through medicines and knee replacement surgery is avoided.
Experts said that there is no age limit for knee replacement, but still efforts are made to get this surgery done for people 60 years or later. However, people who have a lot of problems are suggested knee replacement even before 60. Talking about the upper age limit, knee replacement can be done at the age of 70-80 or even more. Sometimes even 90-year-old people can get this surgery done. If someone’s bones are very weak, there is severe osteoporosis, there is infection in the knees, the knee bones are crooked or there is paralysis in the muscles around the knee, then knee replacement surgery is not done in that condition. In such conditions, other surgeries are done.
Dr. Himanshu Tyagi recently performed knee replacement surgery on an 84-year-old woman who was suffering from severe knee pain for the last 6 years. The elderly woman also had heart diseases, but despite this, the doctors successfully completed her knee transplant surgery. According to the doctor, knee transplant surgery is done with great caution in elderly patients, especially those above 80 years of age. However, nowadays technology has become very advanced and helps in performing knee replacement surgery even in critical conditions.
According to health experts, in knee replacement, the condition of the patient’s bones is first examined. Many people have both knees replaced at once, while some people have surgery on one knee at a time. It takes about one and a half hours to replace one knee. Before this surgery, the lower part of the body is numbed with anesthesia and then this surgery is done.
For this surgery, the patient needs to stay in the hospital for about 4 days. According to the doctor, this procedure is very successful. If a good implant is used, it can last for 20 to 25 years. If the implant is put in with the right technique and by a good doctor, then people can live a trouble-free life for about 20 years after knee replacement.
