To compete with Islamophobia, the appointment of a special envoy of the United Nations

United Nations Secretary -General Antonio Guterresh has appointed Spain’s senior diplomat Miguel Angeel Maratinos, the first special envoy of the United Nations, to face Islamophobia. This appointment has been made with the aim of dealing with the growing anti -Islam spirit worldwide. This step has been raised by the United Nations General Assembly in March 2024, passed on the occasion of International Islamophobia Day – in line with a proposal called ‘Measures to deal with Islamophobia’. The proposal sought to take concrete steps in this direction, including the appointment of a special envoy. A statement issued by the spokesperson’s spokesperson’s office said that Maratinos will continue to be in his current position as the high representative of the United Nations civilizations (UNAOC), and the responsibilities of this new role would be integrated into the current structure. He has worked closely with the United Nations in the Middle East, Africa and Europe as an experienced diplomat. Maurtinos, as the Foreign Minister of Spain from 2004 to 2010, promoted multilateralism, United Nations Reforms and Development Programs. He participated in international programs on issues of hunger, poverty and food security after his government tenure. In 2012, he encouraged food safety evenings with the global dryland alliance (GDA) in Qatar. Moratinos studied law and political science from the University of Communications in Madrid, and has undergone diplomatic training from the Spanish Diplomatic School. He is knowledgeable in Spanish, English and French languages.
