Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rains in Kerala have affected normal life and damaged many houses. Apart from this, roads are submerged, trees have been uprooted, flood water has entered houses and trains are running late. Water has entered houses, schools and shops in low-lying areas of Kuttanad in coastal Alappuzha district, potholes have formed on roads at many places, posing a danger to drivers. A ‘yellow’ alert for heavy rain has been issued in seven districts.
Heavy rain forecast
Meanwhile, the weather department has forecast heavy rains at isolated places in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam districts today. A family of four had a narrow escape when the tiled roof of their house collapsed due to heavy rains at Kaikulangara in Kollam district. Another house at Kannettumukku was completely damaged due to heavy rains in the early hours today, though an elderly woman living in the house said she had a narrow escape as she ran towards the courtyard after hearing a sound at night, police said.
Advice not to go into the sea
Several roads were washed away and houses damaged in the coastal village of Pozhiyoor, where the sea was rough on Friday evening. Relief camps have been set up in the area and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to the persistent bad weather. Severe waterlogging and uprooted trees in many parts of the southern state have thrown normal life out of gear in towns and villages.
Many trains were delayed due to bad weather
Several trains headed to the state capital were reportedly delayed due to bad weather. According to officials, the agriculture sector in Thiruvananthapuram district has suffered a loss of Rs 1.82 crore due to heavy rains in the last three days. They said agricultural produce in 66.89 hectares of land in Thiruvananthapuram has been destroyed. Four houses have been completely destroyed and 41 partially damaged due to torrential rains in the district. Many families have been shifted to relief camps in the district in the last few days. The IMD has issued a ‘yellow’ alert in seven districts of the state, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki, Kottayam and Ernakulam. Yellow alert indicates heavy rain between 6 to 11 cm. (Input-Bhasha)
