toll tax
New Delhi: Before the election results, the government has given another inflation shock. Now the drivers using the highways will have to pay more from Monday. From Monday, the road toll tax rates will increase by an average of 5 percent across the country. The annual revision of the highway user fee was earlier to come into effect from April 1. But it was put on hold due to the elections. The annual revision is likely to be in the range of an average of five percent.
part of the annual process
“The new toll tax will come into effect from June 3, 2024,” a senior NHAI official said on Sunday. This change in toll fee is part of the annual process of revising rates linked to changes in Wholesale Price Index (CPI) based inflation. There are about 855 user toll plazas on the national highway network, at which user fee is levied as per the National Highway Fee (Determination and Collection of Rates) Rules, 2008.
The burden falls on passengers
Officials say the increase in toll charges and taxes on fuel products helps in the expansion of national highways, but opposition parties and many motorists criticise the annual hike in toll tax, saying it increases the cost of transportation of essential commodities and burdens travellers.
Actually, it was announced to increase the toll tax from April 1. But the Election Commission of India (ECI) had asked NHAI to implement the new toll rates on highways after the Lok Sabha elections. Usually, the rates are increased on most toll highways in the country from April 1, but the Election Commission said that the new rates should be implemented only after the Lok Sabha elections. This provided immediate relief to millions of people. But now people will be shocked by the increased toll rate after the general elections. Let us tell you that India has invested billions of dollars in the last decade to expand national highways, whose total length is about 146,000 kilometers, which is the second largest global road network.
