Ottawa: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has again raised the issue of the killing of a Khalistani Sikh separatist in the country last year. Referring to the death of Hardeep Nijjar, he has said that his government stands to protect the rights and freedoms of all the people of Canada. Trudeau testified before a committee Wednesday in its investigation into foreign interference in Canada’s electoral process. He also said that the previous Canadian government was “close” to the Indian government.
According to a ‘live-streaming’ video being shared by local media, Trudeau made the comments while explaining the steps taken by the government after receiving intelligence about foreign interference during the 2019 and 2021 elections. Hardeep Singh Nijjar was murdered outside a gurudwara in Surrey city on June 18 last year. Relations between India and Canada were strained after Trudeau alleged the “possible” involvement of an Indian agent in Nijjar’s murder. India strongly rejected Trudeau’s allegations, calling them “absurd” and “motivated”.
India had declared Nijjar a terrorist
India had declared Nijjar a terrorist in 2020. During his testimony, Trudeau also explained the role of the national security and intelligence adviser, and actions taken after receiving intelligence. He also mentioned Chinese-born Canadians and China’s influence. Trudeau also talked about an intelligence report received three months after the 2019 election. “We have always stood up for the people of Canada, including in the extremely serious case of Nijjar’s murder,” he said. I had raised this issue in Parliament. It reflects our government’s commitment to protecting the rights and freedoms of Canadians.
Trudeau remained silent when China’s name came up in foreign interference in elections
Trudeau played down allegations that the government was doing nothing about foreign interference. Because China’s name has appeared in it. The Prime Minister briefed the inquiry committee about the steps taken by his government to deal with foreign interference. “I think this is certainly a question that should be asked of the previous Conservative government, which was known for its very cordial relations with the current government of India,” Trudeau said.
Trudeau also said his government “has always stood up to protect the rights of minorities and minorities in Canada, even if it upsets their home countries.” And the investigation committee was formed in September last year following reports regarding influencing the 2021 elections. The Liberal Party led by Prime Minister Trudeau had won both the elections. (Language)
