US President Donald Trump says that the Pentagon should be renamed as the ‘War Department’. Trump has said that America needs not only the Department of Defense, but also the attack department, hence the name should be changed. Talking to reporters at the Oval office, Trump said that this change can be announced in the next few weeks. He said that the Congress will not even need approval for this and we will make it just.
What did Trump say?
At a joint press conference with South Korean President Li J Muung, Trump said, “When we won the First World War and Second World War, it was called the war department, and for me, it is exactly the same.” He added, “Everyone likes that when it was a war department, we had an incredible history of victory, then we changed it to the Defense Department.”
President Harry Truman played an important role in this
Trump also rejected critics who argue that this change could be symbolic. He said, “I don’t just want to be the Defense Department. We also want to be aggressive.” The War Department was established in the US in 1789. Till 1947 it was known by this name. After this, President Harry Truman changed its name to the Defense Department.
‘We also want an attack’
During this time the Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was also with Trump. Trump said, “So you started saying Peat, you started saying ‘security department’ and I did not like it. Are we security? Why are we security? So earlier it was called ‘War Department’ and it was a strong name.” Trump further said that this step is not just symbolic, “We don’t just want security. We also want an attack.”
