Senior IAS officer TV Somanathan was born on 10 May 1965 in Tamil Nadu. After completing his initial education here, he did further studies from Punjab University, from where he did Bachelor of Commerce i.e. B.Com. After this, he also got a master’s degree from the same university. Then, he did PhD in Economics from Calcutta University. TV Somanathan did not stop here. His zeal for studies can be gauged from the fact that he did a diploma in Executive Development Program from Harvard Business School.

TV Somanathan has also been a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England, Chartered Institute of Management Accountants London, Chartered Certified Accountants Association, Institute of Company Secretaries of India, and Institute of Cost Accountants of India, etc.
He became an IAS in 1987
TV Somanathan was selected in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) through the UPSC examination. He is a 1987 batch IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre. Currently he is serving as Union Finance Secretary and Expenditure Secretary. Now he has been made Cabinet Secretary for two years. According to the information given by the Government of India, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of TV Somanathan as Cabinet Secretary for a term of two years from 30 August 2024. It has also been told by the government that from the date of assuming office till assuming the post of Cabinet Secretary, he will also work as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Cabinet Secretariat.
Held many positions, even served the World Bank
It is not that TV Somanathan has been given an important responsibility for the first time. He has held many important positions before this as well. TV Somanathan has held many important positions in the Central and Tamil Nadu governments. He has also served as Secretary to the Chief Minister, Joint Vigilance Commissioner, Executive Director Metrowater etc. From 2007 to 2010, Somanathan was also the Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Corporation Limited. From 2011 to 2015, he was the Director of the World Bank. Between 2015 and 2017, he also held the post of Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Apart from this, he was also Additional Secretary in the PMO. For some time, he also worked as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
