New Delhi. Uniform Civil Code and one country-one election are on the agenda of Modi government. This important statement has been given by Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. This statement of Arjun Ram Meghwal is important in the sense that this time there were speculations that due to not getting majority on its own, BJP’s Modi government might not be able to fulfill many promises made in its manifesto. However, ally JDU had said that it is in favor of UCC, but before implementing it, there should be discussion with all sections.
In fact, in the recently held Lok Sabha elections, BJP could win only 240 seats. At the same time, NDA ally Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP has won 16 seats and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar’s JDU has won 12 seats. Apart from this, Shiv Sena is the fourth largest component of NDA. Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena has won 7 Lok Sabha seats. In such a situation, compared to 2014 and 2019, this time the Modi government is running the government at the center due to the allies. Due to this, there were speculations that PM Narendra Modi might not be able to fulfill the ambitious promises like Uniform Civil Code and One Country-One Election declared in the BJP’s manifesto.
BJP had fiercely raised the issue of UCC i.e. Uniform Civil Code and One Country-One Election during the Lok Sabha elections. PM Narendra Modi and other big BJP leaders had especially talked about implementing UCC in election rallies. Modi and BJP leaders had told in public meetings during the Lok Sabha elections how the BJP government of Uttarakhand has successfully implemented UCC. Let us tell you that during the assembly elections held in Uttarakhand in 2022, BJP had made the most important promise of implementing UCC. On this announcement of BJP, the voters of Uttarakhand handed over power to it for the second consecutive time. As soon as the government was formed, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami had constituted a committee under the chairmanship of retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Dwivedi to implement UCC. After receiving the report of the committee, the UCC bill was passed in Uttarakhand in 2023 and implemented. Earlier, UCC was applicable only in Goa in India. UCC was implemented in Goa during Portuguese rule.
