Keir Starmer
London: Human rights advocate Keir Starmer will become Britain’s new Prime Minister on Friday. Starmer has advocated a positive change in the Labour Party’s relations with people of Indian origin. Starmer had pledged a new strategic partnership with India, including a free trade agreement (FTA) if his party gets a strong mandate. The Labour Party, led by Starmer, has won a landslide victory in Britain’s general election. Starmer told supporters at a victory rally that ‘change will begin now.’
Starmer is the hero of victory
Starmer will now obviously be credited with the Labour Party’s victory after a crushing electoral defeat in December 2019. He is trying to reshape his party’s relationship with British Indians, who were affected by the alleged anti-India stance on Kashmir during the tenure of former leader Jeremy Corbyn. Starmer said in his victory address, “This is the purpose of four and a half years of change in the party: a changed Labour Party that is ready to serve our country, ready to put Britain back in the service of working people.”
Starmer’s stance on India
His approach to India as Prime Minister was reflected in the Labour Party’s 2024 election manifesto which called for “a new strategic partnership with India, including a free trade agreement as well as deepening cooperation in areas such as security, education, technology and climate change.” He said at the ‘India Global Forum’ last year, “I have a clear message for all of you today. This is a changed Labour Party.” Starmer said, “My Labour Party government will seek a relationship with India based on our shared values of democracy and aspiration. It will strive for a free trade agreement (FTA). We share that ambition, but will also make a new strategic partnership for global security, climate security, economic security.”
‘There is no place in Britain for hatred towards Hindus’
During a visit to the Shree Swaminarayan Temple in Kingsbury, north London, during the campaign last week, he said in his message to British Hindus that there is “absolutely no place in Britain for hatred towards Hindus”. This is a message he has been repeating during the Diwali and Holi celebrations for the past few years, with the Labour Party being said to be ready to govern after 14 years in opposition.
Children are kept away from politics
Before joining politics, Starmer spent a long time in the legal profession. He was first elected as a Labour Party Member of Parliament from London in 2015. Starmer and his wife have kept their two teenage children away from the political limelight. His wife works in the National Health Service (NHS). Starmer said in his speech that the change he promised would begin soon.
Starmer looked emotional about his mother
Born in London to a toolmaker father and a nurse mother serving in the NHS, Starmer spent most of his life in the town of Oxted in Surrey. In his speech, he also appeared emotional about his mother, who died a few weeks before he became an MP for the first time in 2015. Starmer, like outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, has also studied from Oxford University. (Language)
