Congress’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that it has become a habit of the Modi government to turn a blind eye in every difficult situation… and to remain silent. Our 20,000 Indian youth in Ukraine are forced to deal with fear, apprehension and life-threatening situations.
Meanwhile, former Minister of State for External Affairs and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said that he is getting messages from the families of students stranded in Ukraine and they need to be evacuated. In the tweet, he advised Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make a diplomatic strategy, not an election strategy. Tharoor also criticized Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan for his visit to Russia amid the developments and cited the example of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. When Beijing invaded Vietnam in 1979, Vajpayee as the then foreign minister canceled a visit to China. Tharoor said that if Imran Khan has any self-respect, he will do what Vajpayee sahab did.
Surjewala tweeted that why was arrangements not made in time to bring the Indians safe? Is this a ‘self-reliant’ mission. Surjewala accused the government of giving more priority to the elections. He said that instead of taking care of you all, Prime Minister is busy in election rallies… but we Indians are praying for the well being of all of you.
Congress MP Vivek Tankha also questioned why India failed to do so despite repeated warnings when the US evacuated its citizens on time. He said it was a very bad strategy.
Former Union Minister Manish Tewari tweeted that India should categorically condemn the Russian invasion of Ukraine in unequivocal terms. Tiwari said that we should not make the same mistake again with Russia, which we did with the then Soviet Union, when we did not condemn the Soviet invasion of Hungary – 1956, Czechoslovakia – 1968, Afghanistan – 1979.
Congress leader Milind Deora said that India should learn the right lessons from the Russia-Ukraine conflict and diversify the relationship and not rely only on allies on paper.
