The Indian Air Force has kept two IL-76 military transport aircraft on standby to evacuate Indians stranded in conflict-hit eastern Ukraine cities from Moscow, Russia’s capital city of Sumy and Kharkiv. Officials said that Indians stranded in cities in eastern Ukraine cannot go to the western border, with the Indian Air Force planning to evacuate them with the help of Russian military forces. As of now, India is evacuating its citizens from Ukraine’s western neighbors such as Romania, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary as Ukraine’s airspace has been closed since February 24.
Plane ready for flight to Moscow
Officials said two IL-76 aircraft, which are of Russian origin, have been kept on standby so that they can immediately fly to Moscow and evacuate the Indians. So far, the Air Force has evacuated a total of 1,428 Indians in seven flights from Ukraine’s western neighbors. These seven flights have been operated by American-origin C-17 aircraft. India on Thursday said it is focusing primarily on evacuating its citizens from the city of Kharkiv and other conflict areas in eastern Ukraine.
In a media briefing, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that around 1,000 Indians arrived in Sochin from Kharkiv on Wednesday following the urgent advisory issued by the Indian Embassy in Ukraine. Bagchi said that we estimate that despite our advisory, there are still a few hundred people in Kharkiv. Unfortunately a new round of violence has started in the city on Thursday.
