russia ukraine war
Kyiv: More people were urged to evacuate on Monday as tensions remained high in Russia’s Kursk border area. Russian forces in the Kursk border region were still struggling to repel a Ukrainian offensive after nearly a week of fierce fighting. Meanwhile, Russian emergency officials said more than 76,000 people had fled their homes in the Kursk area, the same region where Ukrainian troops and armoured vehicles crossed the border about 30 kilometres into the region on August 6.
Ukraine’s campaign is extremely confidential
Ukrainian forces quickly entered the town of Sudzha, about 10 kilometers across the border, after launching an attack. They reportedly still hold the western part of the city. Ukraine’s operation is being conducted with utmost secrecy. It is not yet clear whether the aim of Kiev’s army is to capture the area or to raid it. Earlier, two people, including a four-year-old boy, were killed in drone and missile attacks by Russia on Kiev overnight on Sunday.
Russia shot down Ukraine’s missile
Kursk regional governor Alexei Smirnov said Russian air defence systems shot down a Ukrainian missile that hit a residential building, wounding 13 people. Ukraine’s air force said Russia fired four ballistic missiles and 57 drones at Ukraine, but its air defence systems shot down 53 of them. Russia fired several missiles at a residential area in Kiev’s Brovary district, damaging buildings and finding the bodies of a 35-year-old man and his son in the rubble, according to Ukraine’s emergency service. Three people were also injured in the attack.
