Speed doesn’t bother everyone – Brian Lara
In the last ODI series, Malik played two matches but could not take a single wicket. In IPL 2023, Malik played only seven matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad with Lara as the head coach, taking five wickets at an economy rate of 10.35. He will be a sensation but very quickly he will have to learn that fast bowling doesn’t really bother the best players in the world,” Lara said in a YouTube show called ‘Wake Up With Sorabh’. You have to have the ability to do something with the ball, be smart, and probably know when to back off or when to accelerate. He is very young and has many years left in him.
Asked to learn from other fast bowlers including Dale Steyn
After making headlines in IPL 2021, Malik hit top form in IPL 2022, taking 22 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 20.18 and an economy rate of 9.03, and won the Emerging Player of the Tournament award. The 54-year-old Lara feels Malik needs to learn from the careers of other great fast bowlers and feels he can grow by working with Sunrisers Hyderabad bowling coach, South African great Dale Steyn.
He said, ‘We have a lot of different examples. Wasim Akram had raw pace, Malcolm Marshall had devastating pace, and Michael Holding was also blazing fast. But they all knew that at some point, they would have to do more than just have pace to be able to bowl fast. If he (Malik) works with Dale Steyn, he can definitely be one of the best players in India.
