Summary
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is probing the money laundering case against Rana Ayyub. In the past, the ED had attached an amount of more than Rs 1.77 crore of Ayyub. Job is accused of using the money raised for relief work through online crowdfunding for personal expenses.
India has strongly reacted to the allegations of judicial harassment against journalist Rana Ayyub on behalf of the UN mission in Geneva, terming it as baseless and unfair. India said that the rule of law is followed in the country and no one is above it.
India’s Permanent Mission in Geneva said in a tweet that propagating a misleading story only tarnishes the reputation of the UN mission.
It said, the allegations of alleged judicial harassment are baseless and unwarranted. India upholds the rule of law but it is equally clear that no one is above the law. We expect that the senior representatives will be given objective and correct information.
On the other hand, official sources in New Delhi said that a note verbal will be issued by the Indian Mission in Geneva in the matter. It will also be taken up at the United Nations Office.
Earlier in Geneva, the official Twitter handle of the United Nations had tweeted online about the relentless anti-women and sectarian attacks against Job. It had said that Indian authorities should investigate these immediately and thoroughly and end judicial persecution against them.
