UP News: Shopkeepers removed the boards, fruit vendor Nisar said- 'There was no problem with the name plate but...'

Muzaffarnagar. As soon as the Supreme Court’s order came on Monday regarding the installation of name boards outside shops during the Kanwar fair, a wave of happiness ran among the people of Muzaffarnagar district. The shopkeepers who set up fruit carts and paan shops on Meerut Road of the city called the Supreme Court’s decision a historic decision. Thanking the court, they removed the name boards from their shops and carts, the video of which is going viral on social media. These people say that these boards should be removed permanently, due to this the business had decreased and now Inshallah the work will be fine. Nisar, who sets up a fruit cart, said, ‘We have removed the name plate and we thank the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has decided in our favor. We are feeling very good. There was no problem, but there was a slight impact on the work. Now there will be no difference. Work will go on as before, these should be removed permanently.’

Shah Alam, who runs a paan shop, says that this is a very historic decision of the court. We are feeling very happy. We have removed the boards. See, this was discrimination. These boards should be removed permanently, this was having a very negative impact on the business, due to which the business had decreased. Inshallah, now the business will be fine.

It is worth noting that the Supreme Court on Monday put an interim stay on the instructions issued by the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments, in which hotels and shopkeepers located on the Kanwar Yatra routes were asked to display the names of their owners and employees. In Madhya Pradesh too, the Ujjain Municipal Corporation had directed shopkeepers on Saturday to display names and mobile numbers outside their shops. The opposition had alleged that the purpose of these instructions was to promote religious discrimination. RLD had also demanded the withdrawal of this order. The Supreme Court has issued notices to the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh. The bench said that it can be made mandatory for hotels to display what type of food they are serving, such as whether they are vegetarian or non-vegetarian.

Elaborate arrangements have been made in several states for the Kanwar Yatra, which began on Monday with the beginning of the Hindu calendar’s month of Sawan. In Sawan, lakhs of Shiva devotees carry holy water from the Ganga in Haridwar to their homes and offer it at Shiva temples on the way. Many devotees consider meat consumption taboo in this month, which is considered holy. A controversy had erupted over the instructions to display the names of state governments. Further hearing on this issue will be held on Friday.

The apex court gave this order while hearing several petitions including the petition of MP Mahua Moitra, academician Apoorvanand Jha, columnist Aakar Patel and NGO ‘Association of Protection of Civil Rights’ challenging the instructions of the state governments. At the beginning of the hearing, the bench asked senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for Moitra, whether any formal order has been passed in this matter. Singhvi said that an ‘indirect’ order has been passed regarding displaying the names of the owners of the eateries. Singhvi said that the order of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand regarding displaying the names of the owners of the eateries is ‘exclusion on the basis of identity’ and it is against the Constitution.
