New Delhi: Recently, amid the incidents of death of some Indian students in America, US Ambassador Eric Garcetti has given a big statement. He said that America is a safe country and it takes great care of Indian students. He assured the students’ parents that ‘when their children are in America (then) they are our children.’ Garcetti’s comments come amid reports of deaths of Indian and Indian-origin students in the US since January this year. The US remains the preferred destination for higher studies among Indian students, but recent events have raised concerns among the Indian-American community as well as the Indian population.
At the ‘American Center’, Garcetti said, “We take great care of Indian students in America. We want parents to know that when their children are in America, they are our children. There is a wealth of resources out there that can help students prepare whether it’s a mental health issue. Expressing grief over the deaths of students in the past few months, the US Ambassador to India stressed that “America is a safe country.” Garcetti underlined that students studying abroad should connect with people, including their trusted friends there. Should be aware of any dangerous situation and should be aware of it. He also said that students should also know what to do if there is a mental health problem.
Students need to be aware of local laws
The US Ambassador said that students going to study in America should also be aware of the security of the university campus and local laws. He said that “sometimes students are not aware of all these things because it is a new country for them.” Garcetti, who has been the mayor of Los Angeles, also shared his experience of personal security during the study. He said, “When I was a student, I went to New York in the 1980s, which was a very dangerous city at that time. I had heard from campus security that ‘don’t go here, don’t go there at night. All this was before the advent of mobile phones. Now, in 2024 we have much more resources than we had at that time.
Students should make better use of resources
”A program was organized here at the ‘American Centre’ before leaving for the US for a group of Indian students who were selected for various academic programs in various universities like Purdue University, University of Virginia, University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University and University of Los Angeles. has been chosen. Many students also participated in this program online. Garcetti spoke briefly with the students and asked them to make the best of their time in the US and make good use of the resources. The Ambassador said American universities are “unique places” to provide tremendous experiences to students, including Indian students, and he wants all students to have that rich experience. In view of recent incidents, Garcetti said, “Whether it’s in America, or India, incidents happen with students. He also urged the students to follow the safety instructions on the campus. A large number of Indian students go to study in American universities. Last year, the US consular team in India issued more than 1,40,000 student visas.(Language)
