new Delhi . American journalist Brent Renaud has been shot and killed in the city of Irpin outside Kyiv. Kyiv police chief Andrey Nebitov said he was targeted by Russian troops. Two other journalists were injured, who were taken to the hospital.
According to the BBC report, this is the first death of a foreign journalist covering the war in Ukraine.
Images are circulating showing a press ID issued to Renaud by the New York Times.
The newspaper said in a statement that it was saddened to hear of Renaud’s death, but that he was not working for the newspaper in Ukraine.
The New York Times said that he last worked for the newspaper in 2015. The press ID he was wearing was released years ago. It is not clear who Renaud was working for in Ukraine.
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan says the US will impose its ‘appropriate consequences’ on Russia. The BBC told that the news of the death is shocking and frightening. US officials will consult with Ukrainian officials about this.
Another American journalist, Juan Arderando, was taken to hospital after the incident. He told an Italian reporter that he was with Reynaud when the fire broke out.
