Washington: 43 lawmakers from both parties in the US have urged the Joe Biden administration to take immediate action to protect more than 2.5 lakh ‘documented dreamers’, a large number of whom are Indians. ‘Documented Dreamers’ are foreign nationals who have come to the US as dependents under their parents’ temporary, non-immigrant visas, usually work visas. These people will be forced to self-deport after the temporary legal status obtained through their parents’ visas expires.
No option but to leave America
In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Director Dr. M. Jeddou, the lawmakers said that despite growing up in the US with legal status, children of long-term visa holders lose their dependent status when they turn 21 and often have no choice but to leave the US if they cannot obtain new status. “This is because, in part, their families’ status adjustment applications are widely backlogged and making it difficult for them to obtain permanent resident status,” the letter said.
Senator Alex Padilla led the campaign
Let us tell you that this entire campaign was led by Senator Alex Padilla, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Migration, Citizenship and Border Security, and Representative Deborah Ross, who have introduced a bipartisan legislative measure to protect more than 2,50,000 ‘documented dreamers’ through the America’s Children Act.
