New Delhi: Top officials of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday and urged him to take ‘immediate and necessary action’ to protect Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh. Several Hindu temples, houses of Hindu community people and business establishments have been vandalized in Bangladesh since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday. The country was in chaos after violent protests against the Sheikh Hasina-led government over the controversial quota system in jobs.

‘Made the Hindus aware of their suffering’

Concerned over the incidents of continued attacks and persecution of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh, VHP president Alok Kumar and general secretary Bajrang Bagda on Friday met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and urged him to take immediate and necessary action to protect the distressed communities in the neighbouring country, a statement issued by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad said. After the meeting, Bagda said that the VHP president and he apprised Shah of the “pain and distress” of the Hindu society in India over the killings, arson and other forms of inhuman persecution of Hindus and other minority communities in Bangladesh.

‘Younus has admitted to harassment’

Bagda said that immediate necessary action was demanded for their safety in the neighbouring country. The VHP general secretary said, ‘The Home Minister informed about the action taken by the government in this direction and said that the government is taking necessary action in this matter with full sensitivity and seriousness. The Home Minister expressed hope that since the head of the interim government has not denied incidents of persecution of Hindu minorities (in Bangladesh), he will take appropriate steps to bring the situation under control.’ Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government on Thursday, replacing Hasina.

‘VHP will set up helpline number’

Bagda said that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also raised the issue of safety of Hindus in his congratulatory message to the head of the interim government of Bangladesh, action has been taken by the government to ensure the safety of all Indians, including students in Bangladesh. He said, ‘Every possible action has been taken by establishing contact with the authorities there for the safety of Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Christian minorities and their places of worship.’ Bagda said that the VHP has decided to set up an emergency helpline and the number in this regard will be released soon.
