Ranchi: Enforcement Directorate officials were shocked to see bundles of currency notes found in a raid on the premises of Jharkhand government minister Alamgir Alam’s secretary and his domestic help. Six machines had to be called to count the bundle of votes. While counting the notes, two machines got damaged due to heat. At present the work of counting of notes is going on. A domestic help of Sanjeev Lal, personal secretary to Jharkhand Rural Development Minister Alam, reportedly lives at the place where the cash was recovered.
The amount is expected to be Rs 20-30 crore.
Whereas minister Alamgir Alam says that he has no information about it. ED sources say that this amount could be between Rs 20-30 crore. The cash recovered mainly consists of Rs 500 notes and some jewelery has also been recovered. Alam (70) is a Congress leader and represents Pakur seat in the Jharkhand Assembly. This raid is related to the money laundering case against former Chief Engineer of Rural Works Department, Virendra K. Ram.
bribe in exchange for award of contract
Virendra Ram was arrested by ED last year. In a statement issued last year, the agency had alleged, “Virendra Kumar Ram, posted as Chief Engineer in the Rural Works Department, Ranchi, had earned illegal income in the name of bribe from contractors in return for awarding contracts.”
Property worth Rs 39 crore seized
The agency had seized assets worth Rs 39 crore of the officer. “The proceeds of crime thus generated were used by Virendra Kumar Ram and his family members to live a ‘luxurious’ lifestyle,” the statement said. The money laundering case against Ram is related to a complaint by the Jharkhand Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
