New Delhi. India has suffered a major setback in the Paris Olympics. Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified. Vinesh, who had made it to the women’s 50 kg weight category wrestling final, has been disqualified from the Olympics due to excess weight. When she was weighed this morning, she was found to be 100 grams more than 50 kg, due to which she was disqualified. The Indian team requested the Olympic Association to give additional time to meet the weight criteria, but India’s request was rejected. With this, India’s dream of a gold medal in the Paris Olympics was shattered.
Let us tell you that Vinesh Phogat had made it to the finals on Tuesday itself by performing brilliantly in three matches. The final is to be played tonight in which Vinesh was expected to win a gold medal. Performing brilliantly in the Paris Olympics, Vinesh made history yesterday by defeating Cuba’s Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals and made it to the finals. Before this, no female wrestler has been able to reach the finals in the Olympics. In the quarter-final match, she defeated Ukraine’s player Oxana Livach 7-5. Earlier in the round of 16, she defeated four-time world champion Yui Susaki of Japan in a tremendous manner and made it to the quarter-finals.
The Indian Olympic Association regretted, “The Indian contingent is sharing the news of Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg category. Despite the team’s best efforts overnight, her weight exceeded 50kg by a few grams this morning. There will be no further comment by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you to respect Vinesh’s privacy. At the moment, the Indian contingent would like to focus on the current competitions.”
