Vinesh Phogat
Indian female wrestler Vinesh Phogat has created history in Paris Olympics 2024. Vinesh has made it to the finals by defeating Cuban wrestler Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals of 50 kg freestyle wrestling. With this historic win, Vinesh’s silver medal is confirmed. In this way Vinesh has become the second female wrestler to win a medal in the Olympics. Earlier, Sakshi Malik had won the bronze medal for India in women’s wrestling. If Vinesh manages to win the final, she will not only become the first female wrestler to win a gold medal in Olympic history but also the first Indian female athlete. Even if Vinesh loses the final, she is sure to get a silver medal.
Before the Paris Olympics, Vinesh had every major medal except the Olympics. This includes Commonwealth Games gold, Asian Games title, two World Championship bronze medals and eight Asian Championship medals. However, she could not win a medal in Rio and Tokyo Olympics. But she did wonders in Paris Olympics and ensured a medal.
Wrestlers from Japan and Ukraine were defeated
Earlier, Vinesh Phogat created a big upset in the Olympic Games by defeating Japan’s strong wrestler Yui Susaki in the pre-quarterfinals and then defeated Ukraine’s Oxana Livach to make it to the semi-finals. Tokyo Games gold medalist and four-time world champion Susaki had not lost any of the 82 matches in her international career before this. But as soon as she faced Vinesh, the match turned in the last few seconds and the Indian wrestler registered a spectacular 3-2 victory. She then defeated former European champion and 2018 World Championship bronze medalist Livach 7-5 in the quarter-finals. 29-year-old Vinesh, who is playing her third Olympics, is now just one win away from the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
