Violence erupted in Bangladesh, former captain's house set on fire, protesters burnt down cricketer's house

Dhaka. Violence and chaos continue in Bangladesh after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country on Monday. Meanwhile, protesters have reportedly set fire to the house of former Bangladesh cricket team captain Mashrafe Mortaza. Mortaza, an MP from Khulna Division’s Narail-2 constituency, won for the second consecutive time as an Awami League candidate in the general elections held earlier this year.

Local media reported that after Sheikh Hasina left the country, protesters vandalised and set fire to Mortaza’s house. Mortaza took 390 wickets and scored 2,955 runs in 36 Tests, 220 ODIs and 54 T20 Internationals in his long cricket career. He has led Bangladesh in 117 matches across all formats, the most for his country.

After quitting cricket, he entered politics by joining the Hasina-led Awami League in 2018 and was elected MP from Narail-2 seat. Bangladesh’s leading daily newspaper ‘Dhaka Tribune’ reported that the protesters also set fire to the district Awami League office and vandalized the house of its president Subhash Chandra Bose. Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina landed at Hindon Air Base in Ghaziabad on Monday evening. She came by a military transport plane of the Bangladesh Air Force. Thousands of protesters in Bangladesh attacked and vandalized the Prime Minister’s official residence Ganabhaban in Dhaka.
