When was NOTA introduced?
NOTA was introduced in India following a Supreme Court ruling on 27 September 2013. Its purpose was to discourage political parties from fielding tainted candidates. The “None of the Above” (NOTA) option on the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) is available to voters who do not want to support any political candidate. It allows them to exercise their right not to vote without disclosing their decision.
First use of NOTA
The NOTA option was first used in India in 2013 in the assembly elections held in four states – Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh and the Union Territory of Delhi. More than 15 lakh people used this option in the state elections. The prevalence of NOTA increased in the Lok Sabha elections and in 2019 NOTA got the highest number of votes in Gopalganj.
