Manipur Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) on Saturday announced re-polling on April 22 at 11 polling stations in Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency. This decision came on the instructions of the Election Commission which had asked to declare the voting held at these polling stations on April 19 invalid and conduct fresh voting. After this decision of the Election Commission, voting is being held in two phases for both the Lok Sabha seats of Manipur. The Commission had already decided to conduct voting in two phases on the Outer Manipur seat. Now, with re-polling being held in 11 booths of Inner Manipur, it has become the second seat in the country, where voting is being held in two phases.
The election official said that the polling stations where re-polling will be conducted include Moirangkampu Sazeb and Thongam Leekai of Khurai constituency, four in Kshetrigao, one in Thongju of Imphal East district, three in Uripok, one polling booth in Konthoujam of Imphal West district. Is included.
Why is re-polling happening?
Allegations of firing, threats, vandalism of EVMs at some polling stations and capturing of polling stations were reported from Manipur, which is affected by caste conflict. Voting for Manipur’s two Lok Sabha seats, Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur, took place in the first phase on Friday and 72 percent voters exercised their franchise. Earlier, Congress had demanded re-polling at 47 polling stations, alleging election rigging and booth capturing during the voting held on Friday for two Lok Sabha seats of Manipur. Congress Manipur unit president K. Meghchandra said the party has lodged a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer of Manipur and has sought re-polling at 36 polling stations in ‘Inner Manipur’ constituency and 11 polling stations in ‘Outer Manipur’ constituency. Have demanded.
Why is voting taking place in two phases in Outer Manipur?
When the Election Commission had announced the dates of Lok Sabha elections 2024, it had made it clear that voting would be held in two phases in Outer Manipur. The state has been affected by violence in the last one year. Clashes continue between two communities here. Keeping this in mind, the Election Commission had decided to conduct voting in two phases in Outer Manipur so that law and order can be maintained and voting can be conducted in a fair manner while ensuring the safety of everyone. Although voting was to be held in a single phase in interior Manipur, violence took place at several booths here too. After this, the Commission has decided to conduct re-polling at 11 booths.
