Mahindra Thar has been introduced in the Indian market in a new way. There is also a tremendous craze among the customers about this SUV, the direct evidence of this is only by looking at its waiting list (about 7 months). At the same time, the country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki is also preparing to launch its new Maruti Jimny in the domestic market. In such a situation, the question is coming in the mind of most people that choosing between these two vehicles will be a profitable deal.
The company launched the next generation model of Mahindra Thar in the market last year, this offroading SUV presented with a completely new look and design is better than the previous model in many ways. At the same time, Maruti Suzuki introduced the 5-door version of its Jimny in front of the country during the last Auto Expo. Currently, Maruti Suzuki is producing the three-door Jimny in India and exporting it abroad.
Maruti Suzuki will introduce the 5-door version of the Jimny in the Indian market and evaluation is underway. So let’s see if it is worth waiting for the upcoming Jimny or will it be a better alternative to the current Mahindra Thar.
Whose engine is stronger?
Mahindra Thar looks more powerful in terms of engine capacity. The company has launched it in the market with both petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol variant has a 2.0-litre engine that generates 150PS of power and a 2.2-litre diesel engine produces 130PS of power. The Maruti Jimny, on the other hand, will only be available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine that churns out 102PS of power. Although this SUV also comes with a diesel engine, but Maruti Suzuki has stopped production of all diesel cars in the Indian market.
Size in Figures Mirror:
Apart from Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra is also working on a 5-door version of its Thar, although looking at the size of the current 3-door version, Mahindra Thar is bigger in size. On the other hand, Maruti Jimny is not only small in size but also light in weight. The Jimny is less in length, width and height than the Thar, but its lightness makes it better. The curb weight of the Diesel-AT Thar is 1,783 kg while the curb weight of the heaviest Jimny is 1,110 kg.
Who is more secure:
It is very important to keep an eye on the safety, as both the vehicles are famous for offroading, so its safety is the key. Safety features have been given to a great extent in both, but despite this Mahindra Thar has managed to score 4 stars during the Global NCAP crash test. On the other hand, the Maruti Jimny has got only 3 stars in the Euro NCAP crash test. Therefore, in terms of safety, Mahindra Thar seems to be a better option.
A look at the design:
However design is a subjective subject, and people’s preferences in this matter can also vary. Coming to the looks of the Maruti Jimny, the design of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class started getting compared on the internet right from the time it was introduced. The round headlamps at the front and the boxy look make it look a lot like a small G-wagon. Meanwhile, Thar is generally regarded as a classic Jeep and is often compared to the Jeep Wrangler.
While the design of the Jimny gives a premium feel, the Thar defines a basic SUV style. Apart from this, another major difference between these two vehicles is seen in the form of their roof top. On the Thar, customers can choose between a convertible soft-top or a fixed hard-top. The Jimny, on the other hand, doesn’t get such an option, it only comes with a hard-top roof.
These features will be available in the cabin:
Both SUVs are much better in terms of features. The Mahindra Thar cabin gets roof mounted speakers, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, multi-information display in the center of the instrument cluster, halogen headlamps with LED DRLs, electrically operated AC, steering-mounted controls and washable interiors on the second-gen model and more. Removable roof panels are also available. Apart from this, standard safety features include dual front airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), rear parking sensors and front seatbelt reminder.
There are many safety features to be seen in the global model of Suzuki Jimny. In which autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, 6 airbags, LED headlamps etc. are available. However, some changes can be made in the model offered in the Indian market. Because Maruti Suzuki will try its best to keep the price of this SUV as low as possible.
Who is better for offroading:
Both the SUVs are equipped with four wheel drive (4WD) system. However, the Suzuki Jimny has not yet got a chance to drive, so nothing can be said about its driving. If you look at those aspects of the dimensions of the vehicle, which help in improving the offroading, then they are as follows.
The Thar has been given a ground clearance of 219mm to 226mm, and its water wading capacity is up to 625mm. That is, it can be easily driven even on bad, pothole or water-filled roads. The Jimny, on the other hand, gets a ground clearance of 210mm and a water wading capacity of 320mm. In this respect, it is far behind Mahindra Thar.
Conclusion:
As of now, there is a lot of confusion surrounding the launch of Maruti Jimny in India. The company has also not given any exact answer in response to its launch dates. Company officials say that it was introduced at the Auto Expo, which has received good response from the customers. Right now the company is evaluating its launch status and it is expected that it will be launched in the market next year. On the other hand, Mahindra Thar is currently in the market between Rs 12.78 lakh and Rs 15.08 lakh and due to heavy demand as well as lack of semiconductor chip, its waiting period has reached 7 months.
