Union Minister introducing the Wakf Board Amendment Bill 2024
New Delhi: Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in the Lok Sabha. This bill has been strongly opposed by the parties of the India Alliance including Congress, SP. There was also a huge uproar in the Lok Sabha over this bill. Congress MP KC Venugopal, while opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill in the Lok Sabha, said that this bill is a fundamental attack on the Constitution. Through this bill, they are making a provision that non-Muslims will also be members of the Waqf Governing Council. This is a direct attack on the freedom of religion. After this, the turn of Christians, then Jains will come.
The Congress MP said that the people of India will no longer tolerate such divisive politics. Venugopal said that the Waqf Bill is against the basic spirit of the Constitution. The Waqf Bill is an attack on rights.
SP and DMK also protested
Samajwadi Party opposed the Waqf Board Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha. SP MP Mohibullab said that the government officials have been given rights over things related to my religion. He accused of interference in religion. The SP MP said that this will harm the country’s reputation. At the same time, DMK MP Kanimozhi said that this bill is a direct violation of Article 30 which is related to the minorities administering their institutions. This bill targets a particular religious group.
JDU supported the bill
At the same time, Janata Dal United (JDU) has supported this bill. Union Minister Lallan Singh supported the bill. He said that a law is being made to make an institution transparent. The Waqf Board has been created by law and the government has the right to amend it. The opposition is only spreading confusion.
Let us tell you that the opposition says that the bill related to amendment in the law governing the Waqf Boards proposes far-reaching changes in the current Act, including ensuring representation of Muslim women and non-Muslims in Waqf bodies. The Waqf (Amendment) Bill also provides for renaming the Waqf Act, 1995 as ‘Integrated Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995.
