Israel Army
Washington: Amid growing fears of war in West Asia, the US has approved the sale of arms worth $20 billion to Israel. These weapons include fighter jets and state-of-the-art air-to-air missiles. This information has been given by the US State Department. The department said that amid fears of Israel getting embroiled in the war, Congress (US Parliament) has been informed about the proposal to sell more than 50 F-15 fighter jets, medium-range air-to-air missiles (AMRAAM), 120 mm shells, mortars and tactical vehicles, among other weapons and military equipment to Tel Aviv. However, Israel is not expected to receive these weapons and military equipment in the near future, as it will take many years to complete the supply contract. The purpose of selling these weapons and military equipment to Israel is to increase its military capability in the long term.
‘The United States is committed to Israel’s security’
The State Department said in a release, “The United States is committed to the security of Israel. Helping Israel achieve and maintain a robust and ready self-defense capability is vital to the national interests of the United States. This proposed sale is consistent with the objectives.” In view of the growing demand from US lawmakers to reduce military aid to Israel amid the death of a large number of civilians in the ongoing war in Gaza, the Biden administration has had to announce some cuts along with the announcement of new aid. This includes stopping the supply of a consignment of 2,000 pounds of weapons to Israel.
When will we receive the first consignment of aircraft?
According to the release, the new contract not only includes the sale of more than 50 fighter planes manufactured by Boeing, but advanced defense kits will also be provided to Israel so that it can make the two dozen F-15 fighter planes in its fleet more effective by equipping them with new engines and radars. The release said that under the new contract, the first batch of fighter planes is likely to be supplied to Israel in 2029.
Iran has threatened
The tensions in the region have escalated into full-blown conflict after nearly 10 months of war in the Gaza Strip and the killing last week of top Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukur in Lebanon and Hamas political chief Ismail Haniya in Iran. Iran and the terrorist groups it supports have blamed Israel for the deaths of Haniya and Shukur and have threatened to take revenge.
