Jharkhand’s first Energy Minister Lalchand Mahato, who was preparing to contest elections from Giridih Lok Sabha seat, died of a heart attack. He was 72 years old. He was the Energy Minister in the government led by Babulal Marandi after the formation of Jharkhand state. It was told that he felt dizzy in the bathroom late Thursday night at his residence in Lalpur in Ranchi and fell unconscious. He was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Lalchand Mahato was originally a resident of Baidkaro village of Bokaro district. His body was brought to the Jharkhand Assembly complex on Friday afternoon, where many people including Assembly Speaker Rabindranath Mahato paid tribute to him.

Mahato started politics from Bharatiya Jana Sangh. He was elected MLA thrice from Dumri assembly seat of Giridih. In 1977, at the age of 25, he became MLA from Dumri assembly on Janata Party ticket in the assembly elections held after the Emergency.
He had announced to form a third front at the state level for the Lok Sabha elections and contest the Giridih Lok Sabha elections this time under the banner of Bahujan Sadan Morcha and Hind Mazdoor Kisan Union. Five days ago, he had also organized a conference of parliamentary constituency workers regarding election preparations. (IANS)
