The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday heard several petitions related to the murder and rape case of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The division bench of the Chief Justice heard the arguments of both the parties during this period. Meanwhile, the court reprimanded the state government for the new appointment of the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in another institution.

‘Was the principal’s statement recorded?’

The court said that while holding an administrative post, his statement should be recorded first. Was the principal’s statement recorded? Also, he had resigned from the post taking moral responsibility for the incident, so how can he be appointed in another hospital? Hearing the petitions, a division bench headed by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam said that “something is lacking” in the investigation and asked whether the statement of the then principal of the medical college, Sandeep Ghosh, was recorded, to which the state advocate replied in the negative.

Asked to apply for leave by 3 pm

After this, Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya’s bench has asked the advocate appearing on behalf of the state to apply for leave by 3 pm today, otherwise the court will pass an order to make him leave the post. The Chief Justice’s bench also mentioned that despite being in an administrative post, he should have been questioned first in the case. The court also asked the state’s advocate why they were protecting him.

The court asked for the diary

The court asked state advocate Suman Sengupta to file an application and bring the resignation of Principal Sandip Ghosh along with his new appointment letter and case diary at 1 pm. Ghosh had resigned from the post of principal saying “the girl who died was my daughter… as a guardian, I am resigning”. However, within 24 hours of his resignation, he got a new appointment as the principal of Calcutta Medical College.
