Landslide devastation in Wayanad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed grief over the loss of lives in the landslide incidents in Kerala’s Wayanad district and assured Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of all possible help from the Centre to deal with the crisis. Prime Minister Modi also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund to the next of kin of each person killed in the incident and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

According to officials, 23 people including three children were killed in a landslide in Kerala’s hill district Wayanad in the early hours of Tuesday. In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, PM Modi said, “Saddened by the news of landslides in some places in Wayanad. My condolences are with all those who have lost their loved ones and I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured. Rescue operations are underway to help the affected people.”

Assurance of all possible help from the Center

PM Modi wrote, “Spoke to Kerala CM P Vijayan and assured him of all possible help from the Centre in view of the situation there.” According to official sources, the Prime Minister also spoke to two Union ministers from the state – Suresh Gopi and George Kurien – about the current situation. They said Modi also asked BJP president J P Nadda to send party workers to help in relief operations in the area. “The Prime Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of those killed in the accident in Wayanad and Rs 50,000 each to the injured,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a post on X.

Rahul raised this issue in Lok Sabha

At the same time, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi raised the issue of landslide in Wayanad in the Lok Sabha. He urged the central government to provide all possible help to the affected people and stressed on making an action plan to deal with such natural disasters. He raised this issue during the Zero Hour in the House. Rahul represented Wayanad in the last Lok Sabha. In this Lok Sabha election too, he was elected from Wayanad along with Rae Bareli, but he resigned from the parliamentary constituency in Kerala. Now his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will be the Congress candidate in the by-election from Wayanad.
